Hey, Bob, Geez, fella, that's painfully pedantic of you. Do you spend your time combing through blogs so you can score points? What's more important? Thematic intention in a play or an inadvertent slip by a young playwright? Is this why you use a pseudonym? Because you fear disapproval yourself? Get a life, old sport, it was a terrific play by an interesting young playwright.

Hi Bob - thanks for your comment and your particularly close attention to my choice of phrasing.

When I said 'what is surprising', I was merely expressing how I felt when writing the play and creating the characters - how they feel about their supposed differences/similarities. It was not my intention to imply that I find my own writing surprising (although it would be pretty fantastic if I did).

Next time, I'll be far more vigilant with my choice of words, so as not to mislead anyone.

How can the writer find something they wrote surprising?

"What is most surprising, however, is that there is far more connecting them than dividing them. Are our perceived cultural differences merely fallacy?"

This is just your dogma, that perceived cultural differences are merely fallacy, coming out in your work which is fine but why is it surprising when you created the characters and wrote the story? Maybe this is what you want the audience to find surprising and the question you want the audience to go away with is; "Are our perceived cultural differences merely fallacy?" But the way you wrote "What is most surprising, however, is that there is far more connecting them than dividing them." is as if you are reviewing another person's work not explaining what you wanted to achieve in your own work.

Thank you! We think that the walk down a flight of metal steps into the basement will signify the transition from reality to theatrical space, to suspension of disbelief. There will not be any stage managers or members of the crew visible, no ushers, or ticket collectors in the basement. The aim of this, as the audience is left alone to choose seats and await the beginning of the play, is to remove the barrier that separates the audience and the action, to 'break down the fourth wall', so to speak. The process of entering the dramatic space will mark the departure from everyday life and the entrance into the post-apocalyptic setting of Hamm's room.
